Pendleton blaze

BayNewsVideo was there when a wildland fire on the Camp Pendleton Marine Base forced its evacuation, providing footage to local Web sites and broadcast news media outlets of the containment effort by firefighters.

Video of the coverage can be viewed here at SignOnSanDiego.com.

According to CAL Fire spokesmen, the fire there forced thousands of people on the base and surrounding neighborhoods to flee.

The so-called Juliet fire ultimately burned more than 4,000 acres and took days to contain.

Evacuation centers were set up at nearby high schools.

Firefighters sought to keep flames confined to the base, using air tankers and helicopters to drop tons of water and fire retardant along the San Luis Rey River.

The aerial assault included the use of two Canadian-built “Superscooper” water bombers leased by the county. According to CAL Fire, the water bombers picked up water from the nearby Pacific Ocean to drop on the blaze. The aggressive drops prevented major losses on the base, Pendleton officials said.

Caused of the blaze is under investigation.

The fire and evacuation followed days of red-flag warnings issued by the National Weather Service.

The fire broke out as temperatures in San Diego County remained high during the second week of October.
